Rey started training with me three weeks ago today. The first thing he told me was that he’s ready to do whatever it takes and will follow my directions to an absolute “T”. He did, and in three weeks he has dropped 3 3/4 inches off his waist. I have him doing nothing drastic, he doesn’t starve, and he isn’t spending hours on a cardio machine. He does work his ass off when he’s working out (quality over quantity) and does exactly what he’s supposed to do in the kitchen.

Rey, this is just the beginning – be proud of what you have accomplished, and be excited for the progress you’re going to make. When you’re down ten inches in the abdominal circumference (in a few weeks), this will seem like it was a decade ago, but it will happen before you know it!

From Struggling With a Few Bodyweight Squats to This…

A video of my client Chade with 700lbs on the leg press. A few months ago, one plate on each side was enough to burn him out. Now? The machine is completely full – his body fat keeps going lower and lower, while his abs become more and more visible.

Way to go Chade, great work (note – his workout partner Andy duplicated the feat with a set of his own for 20 reps)!

Big and Bulky? Absolutely Not!!!

Hey San Antonio,

Here’s another impressive bit of strength from a workout today.

First is Kwani deadlifting 185lbs. She is by NO MEANS big and bulky (by the way, this was more than 40 minutes into the workout…)

Second vid is a couple of reps of squats for 135 reps (bottomed on the safety rails on the last rep) and then 3 chin ups. For the record, the machine she is squatting on is not a typical smith machine – it has front to back movement (as well as vertical movement).

Are You Wasting Your Time With Worthless Exercises? Julie Isn’t.

Just took this video of my client Julie performing dead lifts with her body weight (135lbs). She has only been deadlifting for just over two weeks, which makes this video more impressive. She’s an elementary school teacher, and I’m sure that 135lbs is more than most of her kids way (students beware!). This video was filmed on my webcam, so I apologize for the quality.

And for those women who are worried about getting big and bulky? Julie is rapidly dropping body fat and is looking more and more defined week after week, NOT getting big and bulky by any means!

If your personal trainer has you doing isolation exercise after isolation exercise, followed by a few little machines and maybe some assistance work, you’re being ripped off. Of course, you have to crawl before you walk, but hopefully, your personal trainer has developed a program that focuses on compound exercises that improve functionality and overall strength.

Stop wasting your time – there’s a reason it’s called WORKING out!

Erase 15 Years in Two Months?

This is motivating – a client of mine that in his own words (and this is funny) “erased 15 years of pregnancy in two months”. Laugh at that, but what he has done is nothing short of phenomenal. Forty one years old, father of five, and a very busy man (he shows up at 6am and by that time, he has already been working). To be exact, he has dropped 38lbs of fat and has gained 7lbs of muscle in under 10 weeks.

He thanks me for my assistance, but I quickly remind him that HE made the decision to make the change, HE has stuck with it and stayed completely consistent, and HE follows my directions.

Deron, you’re another great representative for what I do, and I’m excited because this is simply the tip of the iceberg for you and what you’re going to achieve. These pictures are very inspiring, and they’ll inspire people that you’ve never met before!

How Do You Measure Progress?

Hey San Antonio,

When I talk to someone about an exercise program or diet they’re following and I ask them about what type of progress they have made, more times than not they’ll tell me about how much weight they lost. I understand the need for numbers, but I’m going to say it again – weight is not an indicator of progress. Unless you know exactly where that weight is coming from, it makes no difference how much weight you have lost. I know, I know – it’s something that is easily checked and quantified. And that’s how most people think that is what exercise translates to. But the key is to know how much fat you’ve lost, or at much simpler level, what kind of physical changes have you made? Sure, the weight is easy to track, but do you have before and after pics?

A picture is worth a thousand words. With cell phones and other personal communication devices, pictures are easily carried around, and most people can show you hundreds of pics of their night out, their kids, their cars, their house – but where are the progress pics?

A few pictures at the beginning of your fat loss program and regular progress pics will tell the story on whether what you’re doing or not is working. Pictures do not lie, period. Nobody wants to see a picture of themselves out of shape, but when you start seeing a visual change, it’s extremely motivating. And while you can say “I lost 40lbs” and that sounds exciting, does it compare to this?

Well more than 10 inches lost off of each abdominal circumference, and while both guys lost more than 40lbs each, they actually lost more than 50lbs of body fat and gained a significant amount of muscle – actually increasing the amount of food their bodies require and how many calories they burn in whatever they do.

After three months, Rebecca has drastically changed. While she was petite to begin with, she has transformed her body composition, going from being soft to completely defined, conditioned and dropping 20lbs of body fat and adding lean body mass. At 46 years old, that IS definitely impressive.

Another client of mine, Matt, just finished his third month with me. Matt was by no means fat when he begun, but he lost 23lbs of fat and gained 13lbs of muscle – want to talk about a drastic visual change?

While “30lbs in 30 days” sounds enticing, understand that if you lose the wrong 30lbs, you’ll only be a smaller version of yourself (and have the same build and shape). That’s NOT what most people want to achieve. WHAT weight you lose is what really matters.

I assess, re-assess, assess and re-assess every client on a regular basis and track several different measurements. I also advise clients to take before pics, along with regular pics to measure progress. Losing 10lbs of fat and gaining 5lbs of muscle is actually a very impressive change, however, 5lbs lost doesn’t sound impressive (on a side note, I can manipulate my carb, sodium, and water intake and change my weight 12-20lbs in one day, so weight means very little).

While it’s nice to feel as if we’re making progress, real progress is measured in terms of body fat reduction, how clothes fit, and the compliments that come along with drastic physical change. What good does losing 40lbs do if you don’t look any different?

At the end of June 2009 (about 7 months ago) my friend and I decided that we needed to get back into shape. We are both 31 year old males that “WERE” about 40lbs overweight. Real Client Success Story

I just wanted to take a second to recognize amazing progress. Robert has been training with me since December 28, and I have no doubt that he has followed my instructions to a “T”.

How do I know? Well, in 23 days, he has lost 19lbs. Now, I’m not a big “watch the scale” personal trainer, but inches do not lie – he has also lost 5 1/2 inches off of his abdominal circumference since he began.

Boot Camp Challenge

Hey San Antonio,

I’m sitting here enjoying a phenomenal sports day. Lots of college football, Major League Baseball Playoffs – IMO, this is the second best time of the year for sports fans (with bowl season and the NFL playoffs being first and with March Madness right there behind football – hey, I’m a football fan).

A couple of my clients, whom of both made amazing progress, have paid me an amazing compliment (and personally, I am taking it as a testimonial from my clients). You see, I depend on word of mouth referrals, and I take that very seriously. When it happens, I am always honored and flattered that my clients are so satisfied with my personal training service that they’d refer me to their friends, co-workers and families. Well, these two clients are business owners, and we are working together on a boot camp challenge for their employees.

Three days per week, they’ll meet with me for one hour in a group, and it will be what it sounds like: all out exercise for the entire hour, focusing on strength training, muscular endurance, circuit training, cardiovascular training, flexibility and other aspects of fitness. It is also a friendly competition, with the top 5 receiving a special “gift” at the end of each 6 weeks.

Classes like this do more than get employees in shape: First and foremost, they promote teamwork. That is a given. But the hidden benefits are the most important one for business owners – higher levels of fitness equals both higher production from employees along with lowered insurance costs due to the increased physical health of employees. It is no secret that people who exercise and are in great physical shape are less likely to become sick or miss work with health related issues.

As a part of the boot camp, I will also be providing nutritional guidance to all participants. Just like all of my clients: these people will make amazing progress during their time with me – they will lose fat and they will transform their bodies, and hopefully carry on what they learn to continue to make progress on their own.
