Friday Personal Trainer Thoughts!
Hey San Antonio,
Friday is definitely my fun day – I let Peyton spend a few hours with me at work, I like to wear a fun shirt (today it’s Bucee’s – everyone loves the Beaver), and it happens to be a day when I train a lot of hours.
I like to brag on my clients, because I know exactly what it’s like to feel the rewards of progress and to go through the process of change. Today would be very easy to get a video of someone doing something they’ve never done before (Chade just did a set of dumbbell bench press with 100lb dumbbells for the first time, earlier Shelly, who weighs under 120lbs, leg pressed 240lbs for 20 reps), or I could talk about insane progress, since several of my current male clients started out over 20% body fat and are now in the single digits, and I have females that have gone from sizes 12-16 to low single digits over the last couple of months. My expectations are insanely high for every client I have, and when they reach those expectations, I like to recognize them. When I do that, I’m not tooting my own horn, I’m absolutely giving them all of the praise because what I ask of people is not easy. In fact, it is sometimes overwhelming and daunting at first, but once clients start moving toward their goals, the sacrifice seems so minimal.
SO, to Sarah, Deron, Myriam, Troy, Audrie, Christina, Alex, Michelle, Rey, Mike, Desi, Skyler, Jason, Catherine, Chade, Andy, Courtney, Cris, Augie, Becky, Julie, Stacy, Marla, Lisa, Liza, and Rebecca: you all are amazing, make what I do completely worth it and I’m inspired and motivated by each and every one of you and what you not only have done with your bodies, but also what is to come for each of you! Thank you for being amazing!

Client Video – Andy Dead Lifting.
Hey San Antonio,
Here’s a video of my client Andy dead lifting 225 for 12 reps at 170lbs of bodyweight. The impressive thing? He couldn’t do one single solitary push up. Not even ONE. He seriously struggled with bodyweight squats when he first started! Here are some pics of him when he first started… He’s down 50lbs and more than 10″ on his abdominal circumference.
Awesome work, Andy!!!

REAL Client Progress!
Hey San Antonio,
Just wanted to give a little credit to a client who is absolutely killing it!
Rey started training with me three weeks ago today. The first thing he told me was that he’s ready to do whatever it takes and will follow my directions to an absolute “T”. He did, and in three weeks he has dropped 3 3/4 inches off his waist. I have him doing nothing drastic, he doesn’t starve, and he isn’t spending hours on a cardio machine. He does work his ass off when he’s working out (quality over quantity) and does exactly what he’s supposed to do in the kitchen.
Rey, this is just the beginning – be proud of what you have accomplished, and be excited for the progress you’re going to make. When you’re down ten inches in the abdominal circumference (in a few weeks), this will seem like it was a decade ago, but it will happen before you know it!
Awesome job!

Nutrient Timing
Hey San Antonio,
Here’s a quick video blog explaining my nutrient timing concepts. I know that most people have been led to believe that a calorie is a calorie, but when you’re changing your body, it is important to understand that when you eat what plays a huge role in determining what your body uses for fuel during activity, the metabolic rate and how the body uses each nutrient (protein for muscle repair, carbohydrates for glucose in the muscles, fat for essential organ function and stored fat being burned for fuel). What you eat is very important, but I can’t emphasize how important eating the right things at the right times is.

Social Networking Pages Added!
Hey San Antonio,
If you check out “The Pages” section in the upper right hand corner of the blog, you’ll see I’ve added two new Facebook related links: “Follow Me On Facebook” and “Share/Like This Page on Facebook”. Both are directly connected to Facebook, and you can use either by being logged in (or by clicking on the “Like” buttons, which will take you to the FB login screen if you aren’t logged in).
The “Follow Me” link is connected to my FB Fan Page. Here’s a quick look:
The “Share/Like This Page on Facebook” link simply allows you to share the blog as a whole on Facebook.
Of course, last week I added other access and share points from other Social Networking sites in both the sidebars on the left of the page and at the bottom. You can check us out on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, NetworkBlogs, and YouTube or you can update your status from right here on this page on Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace.
I hope these features improve your experience and allow you to share information that you may find here on the Personal Trainer in San Antonio Blog useful!
As always, feedback is appreciated!

The Common Approach to Fat Loss, Cardio, Ab Work? Worthless, and Way Out-Dated…
Hey San Antonio,
For some odd reason, most personal trainers are stuck in the stone age when it comes to fat loss and body transformation: they continue to perpetuate the myths that it’s important to do tons of cardio, eat just enough to survive, waste your workout time with isolation exercises and excessive core work, and do absolutely nothing to educate their clients on how to make progress long after their personal training sessions have ended.
Everyday, I put everything out there for people to see.
I talk about the importance of nutrient timing and controlling natural hormone production through exercise and nutrient timing. My clients are surprised at how much I let them eat, how I reduce their dependence on excessive cardio and how their bodies continue to change. Not just change, but change the way they want them to – they become leaner and more defined, not just a smaller version of their current shape.
I post videos of regular clients doing things they never thought they would ever be able to do: including women lifting heavy weights and becoming leaner and leaner week after week. Not becoming big and bulky.
I explain the importance of training for functionality, and educate individuals about the body’s response to exercise, how the body actually changes and debunk the common exercise myths. Core work is for functionality and has nothing to do with appearance. Re-read that. Doing all of the crunches and sit-ups in the world will do nothing to stimulate the loss of body fat.
How many times have I said “a calorie is not a calorie” and YOU have control over what you get rid of and what you keep (lean body mass or disgusting, excess body fat)?
Of course, I regularly post up progress pics and testimonials from clients who continue to rapidly change, who looked better in their day to day clothing and in swimming suits. What good is it to lose a ton of weight if you still can’t show your progress?
Unfortunately, too many personal trainers still obsess over your caloric intake vs how much cardio you do, etc. They have you on the ground doing hours of abs every month. They insist that it’s important that you do several hours of cardio per week.
My approach is NOT easy. It’s tough as hell. It’s extreme. It goes against everything that everyone else is doing. But it’s completely science based and exponentially more effective than what most people are doing. There’s a reason that so few people obtain results, and why my track record of helping people completely transform the way they look is second to none. I design everything I do from scratch to ensure that you are going to reach your goals as quickly as possible and that your body will be forced to progress because I’ll never let it adapt.
The journey is great, but results breed motivation. Education allows results to persist. There are way too many personal trainers that have next to no grasp of the science behind body transformation, and have very little idea if what they’re doing with you is going to help you reach your goals. Hell, watch them train multiple clients – if every client is completely different, how are their approaches different? Most rarely change anything from session to session.
The choice is yours and is simple: do what everyone else is doing and continue to get the nonexistent results, or follow a program designed specifically for you, your current condition and your short and long term goals and have everyone asking you “How did you do that?”
Break the mold!

No Time To Workout…
Hey San Antonio,
I definitely have other things that I could be doing. I have errands that need to be taken care of. I have appointments to get to. I have to train 10-12 clients per day. I need to go to the grocery store. Get my son to his ballgames. Would like to get a decent night’s sleep. Wouldn’t mind spending time with friends just doing nothing. I have a business to run. Emails to answer. Articles to write. Online clients to work with. Phone calls to make. Need to get the registration on my car. Yard needs mowed. I don’t feel well. Didn’t sleep enough last night. No sitter. I’m achy. My allergies are killing me. I have a meeting at work and will be working late.
But those things are merely obstacles. Whether I have time or not, I will find a way and I will get it done. While excuses are easy to find, when it comes down to it, I’d rather just feel better and look great then look for excuses. Fat loss does not happen by making excuses – it happens by making time and making an effort.
I know you don’t have time now, and you won’t, unless you make it.

Have I Mentioned That Women Will Not Get Big and Bulky?
Hey San Antonio,
I’ve posted a few videos of clients lifting relatively heavy weights, with quite a few of those clients lifting at or more than their bodyweight in some lifts. I’ve gone into great detail how training with intensity will not make you big and bulky, and that becoming extremely large requires a variety of steps to be in place and isn’t going to accidentally happen. There are thousands of guys trying to become huge and they’re still small, so it’s even more difficult for a female.
With that being said, I have posted videos of women performing relatively heavy squats and dead lifts. Please understand that these ladies have worked up to performing these lifts, and when I train an individual, we start at their fitness level and progressively work toward making them stronger, leaner and more confident. They aren’t lifting 225lbs the first time they come to train with me, as the lifts are the result of intense training and following the strict nutritional regimen that I’ve laid out for them.
Here’s another case of hard work paying off. Again, this is Julie, and this time she’s squatting her bodyweight (135lbs) for 5 repetitions. Week after week, she is becoming more lean – not bigger and bulkier.
Had I told her when she first started that she’d be able to do what she’s doing now, I doubt she would’ve believed me. Now, nothing seems impossible for her!
Great job, Julie!

Monday Personal Trainer Video
Hey San Antonio,
Just wanted to post a quick vid for Monday. Just remember: there’s a lot of crazy information out there, and knowing how to determine what is true and what’s not when it comes to changing the body is extremely important. There are no shortcuts, and wasting the effort, time and money searching for a shortcut will end in frustration!

The Shake Weight – Complete Bullshit.
Hey San Antonio
The amount of misinformation that is perpetuated in the fitness industry never ceases to amaze me, and many companies are willing to capitalize on any fear or myth in order to make a buck.
In the last few weeks, I have regularly written about how lifting weights will not make women big and bulky (check out this post). Of course, fat loss is completely evasive for most people, and usually, misconceptions about what needs to be done and fear of the unknown routinely leave people searching for answers or an easier way to change their bodies.
Now, there have been some ridiculous gadgets that have come and gone over the last decade or so. Since so many people believe that they can reduce abdominal fat by doing crunches (you cannot spot reduce fat whatsoever, and doing crunches will do absolutely nothing toward reducing body fat), garbage exercise machines/gadgets such as the Ab Lounge, the Bender Ball and the Abdominator have all made attempts at capitalizing on a common misconception. Everyday, a new fat loss pill comes out, and often, they simply contain a few commonly known products that have a slight fat burning effect, recommend a starvation diet and initially, people lose a little bit of weight, buy more and more of the product (even though they hit an abrupt wall and typically rebound) and the creators laugh all the way to the bank.
Of course, many people really don’t know what’s useful and what is not. But no matter your fitness experience or knowledge about fat loss or changing the body, I think you can see that this is absolute bullshit:
Now, I’ve seen some nonsense in my life, but this takes the cake and is a first class case of false advertising. Muscle fibers do not “tone” or define, they either grow or dissolve. This thing has as much capability to activate fiber recruitment as riding in a wagon down a gravel road. Definition is obtained by reducing body fat, not by repetitive motion.
While I realize I’m giving this nonsensical product a bit of free advertising, I couldn’t resist pointing out how ridiculous it is. And, of course, the product itself is so ridiculous that it is kind of funny.
While I can pray, I guess it’s safe to assume that people will waste their money on this thing. Of course, they’ll be sorely disappointed.
Body transformation can only be achieved by a disciplined approach to following a well-designed program that is dedicated to progression. To achieve health, condition and a physical appearance like you’ve never had requires going further than you’ve ever been. Over 80% of people fail to reach fitness goals that they set for themselves. Do not allow yourself to be a number…

Let Me Say It Again, Ladies: You WILL Not Get Big and Bulky Lifting Weights!
Hey San Antonio,
Here’s my client Julie deadlifting 185lbs, which is 50 more pounds than she weighs. I say it time and time again – lifting weights is essential to becoming lean, and is also very empowering for women. Julie works extremely hard and her fat loss progress is completely inspiring!
She keeps getting leaner and leaner, while getting stronger and stronger. Ladies, stop believing the myth that weightlifting will make you big and bulky!
Great work, Julie!

Motivation to Exercise
Hey San Antonio,
Motivation is different for each of us. Of course, as a personal trainer, I feel that it is my job to at the very least practice what I preach and look like I know what I’m talking about. In itself, that is a big motivator. But my primary motivation for doing the things I do to my body has nothing to do with my profession and everything to do with one thing:

He deserves me to be healthy and strong. To be a role model that shows him the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and hard work.
What drives you?

Lean, Mean Exercise Machine…
Hey San Antonio,
Remember when you were young and could play nonstop, biking, running, climbing, jumping, and seemingly never get tired? Do you see your children doing that and wish that you could keep up?
My son is a ball of energy (here, showing his 6 pack abs):

Whether it’s baseball, soccer, or just running around from the time he wakes up in the morning until he goes to bed, he is full of energy. But the best part? I will not miss a minute of it from being too tired. I refuse to think about how nice it was to be young. I will not have to pass on playing baseball with him or running after him in an innocent game of freeze tag because I ache or I’m just too old.
Exercise is the only defense against aging, against breaking down, and against becoming immobile and lazy. While Peyton looking like this is the exception:

More times than not he’s anything but exhausted, and goes nonstop:
Get in the game – life is too short to slow down!

It’s Not Personal, It’s Business
Hey San Antonio,
In my opinion, I am one of the most motivated people I’ve ever know. No matter what my goal is, I will do whatever I can in my power to make sure that I will reach that goal.
When a client makes a decision to utilize my services, it is a very personal decision for them. Something has brought them to a point to where they want to make a change or enhance the way they perform at a specific activity. For those who meet me, they know that I’m a very out-going and personable person, and those that have trained with me for any length of time know that my friendly personality doesn’t lessen the accountability, hard work, dedication and effort that I not only expect from my clients, but also in what I provide to them as I assist them get to their goals.
When I first meet a client, it is my job to determine exactly what they want to achieve (even if they aren’t 100% sure what they can expect, what is practical and if they can do it), and also what motivates that individual, and I’m damn good at making those determinations. Once I help them define specific and achievable goals, their personal decision becomes my business, and I take those specific goals as seriously as that individual client takes them. I have a reputation for being strict and asking quite a bit of people, but I never ask anyone to do anything unless I know they have it in them to do it. I don’t personally make excuses, and I don’t allow them. I pride myself in being able to recognize what may be holding someone back from their true potential, and helping them get past those obstacles and making the most progress possible.
I’ve said it so many times – changing the body and the life is so much more than just writing up a “diet” (I hate that word) and going through the motions of exercise. It’s being able to keep the lifestyle going through whatever obstacles life throws at us, continuously progressing and modifying the regimen to ensure that progress doesn’t taper.
If you want to follow a workout program that will bring you some results, not really be questioned about what you’re doing when you’re not in the gym, and have a high chance to be able to continue with bad habits that have put you in your current condition, then more than likely, you’d be better off working with another personal trainer at Spectrum or Lifetime. However, if you’re ready to go to a level at which you’ve never been before, then I’m looking forward to meeting you.
