Six Pack Abs, San Antonio?

Posted in General by sanantoniopersonaltrainer on the April 8th, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

What is the secret to six pack abs? Is it the sequence of exercises? Is it ridiculous contraptions like the “Bender Ball”? Ab-Rocker? Ab-Roller? Ab-Mower?

In reality, it is none of the above. Yes, I have clients that say “I’m going on vacation next week and need to do more ab work this week.” Ladies and gentlemen, this doesn’t even make sense.

Abdominal work like crunches, sit-ups, leg raises, etc are for functionality, not aesthetics. Abs are simply the product of reducing body fat, and doing ab work will not spot reduce body fat around the mid-section. Following my nutritional principles, incorporating cardio and intense weight training and staying consistent with it, however, will.

Most people do WAY too much ab work and regardless of how many times they hear the truth, they still believe that doing crunches help make the abs visible. Everyone already has a six pack, however, most people’s happen to be covered up by a layer of fat.

Six Weeks – Hardcore!

Posted in General by sanantoniopersonaltrainer on the April 5th, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

I typically don’t talk about my own exercise programs and/or current diet, but I’m about to go as hardcore as any human can for the next 6 weeks. The last 20 weeks or so have been insanely strict (well, the last 15 years have for the most part) but I’m going to crank it up over the next 6 weeks to a whole different level.

I took this weekend to just relax and prepare – there won’t be any cheat days the next 6 weeks, so I wanted to be absolutely ready to conquer it. I KNOW I’ll do fine!

I’ll be posting a lot of new articles in the upcoming days, so keep checking back in!

Get RIPPED and look HOT, San Antonio!

Skinny? Healthy? Perception Is Not Always Reality…

Posted in Motivation by sanantoniopersonaltrainer on the April 1st, 2009

Hey San Antonio,

Well, I bought a new car yesterday! While waiting for the keys, someone approached me and asked about a t-shirt that I had on, and then asked if I were a bodybuilder. I told them “I love to ‘build my body’ but I currently am not a competitive bodybuilder.” The lady then mentioned how much discipline it must take to workout 4 hours per day and live off of just salad and water. Her husband then mentioned how he’d like to be “skinny” like me… I don’t like that word!

I’m 6′ and about 245lbs. While my abs are plainly visible, I am NOT what I think of as skinny. Lean? Sure. But NOT skinny. Also, I don’t a) workout 4 hours per day (maybe 4-5 hours per WEEK) and b) I definitely don’t live off of SALAD. Truth be told, I hate veggies, but I do eat them (probably not as much as I should) in moderation.

I eat a LOT. But I eat the right things at the right times. I don’t obsess and honestly, I don’t measure my food. That’s old stuff and it’s not necessary if you take care of the first 2 things. It’s a simple perception that people have about those of us that exercise.

Also, many people view “skinny” as “healthy”. I’m not one of those people. I think there’s a happy medium, and definition and lean body mass is what I view as healthy, not where every bone is visible. Muscle protects us from trauma, sickness, and other injury. Also, considering we start losing several percent of skeletal muscle every year at an early age, it’s important to strength train to continue to stimulate muscle growth. NOT to be muscle bound, but to keep the metabolism as high as possible and to protect ourselves.

Training doesn’t require a 20 hour per week commitment, but staying lean and healthy is a lifestyle that fits into everything we do. It definitely doesn’t require starvation, and finally, it doesn’t require hours upon hours of cardio. Moderation is key, and knowledge is paramount. It’s called WORKING out – you should be working hard enough to sweat, and sitting on machines and yapping with a friend doesn’t constitute working out. Effort, intensity, knowledge, consistency and progression will lead to a physique transformation. Excuses and half-assed efforts will lead to a half-assed body.
